Lower School (Grades K-4)
Academic Overview
As visitors walk through our halls they will be quick to spot the smiles on the faces of children engaged in activities and who are secure in their school environment.
Students are encouraged by their teachers to take risks, research new ideas, and learn to make connections and think critically about what is being taught in class.
The Lower School academic program consists of the following: A combination of PAF and Rebecca Sitton Spelling, Everyday Mathematics, Social Studies, Science, Language Arts, Writer’s Workshop, and PAF handwriting. Students also attend weekly classes in Spanish, Art, Drama, Library, Physical Education, Music, and Computer.
A hands-on multi-sensory approach to teaching all subjects will help to build a strong foundation in Reading, Writing, Spelling, and Math. Social Studies and Science concepts are integrated as much as possible throughout Literature, Writing and all Special Area classes.
Individual learning styles are contemplated as students in the Lower School are split for Art and Computer to allow for small group instruction in some core subjects.
“Community Service” is an integral component of the education of our students at Mizzentop. There are two aspects of this program, which are emphasized during the school year: service to our own school community and community service outreach in the surrounding communities.
